Mallard chairs

Chairs may seem like simple everyday objects, but they can be quite difficult to make because of the angles involved. When you deviate from the right angle things get complicated. So when I go through the trouble of making the set-ups and jigs for chairs I usually hope to do sets.

Here are two of a set of eight dining chairs. The marquetry motif of mallards was unique to each one. The marquetry was on the front and the back with identical pictures. But they were done in mirror image so they looked as if the marquetry went all the way through.

I added a little “glitz” by inlaying mother-of-pearl around each of the pictures.

The solid wood is cherry and the background to the marquetry is madrone burl.
